Fennel seeds or saunf are well known for their health benefiting nutrients. This spice is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Fennel seeds are known to have diuretic, anti carcinogenic, anti inflammatory, carminative, and anti microbial properties. Saunf is also a glactogogue and thus promotes lactation.
It is also known to aid digestion and metabolism. It has been used to treat bloating, flatulence, indigestion, and cramping. It also provides relief from colic and irritable bowel syndrome. Saunf is also used to treat bad breath. Being rich in antioxidants it protects the body from cancer, infection, heart disease, stroke and many other diseases. The seeds are high in fibre and thus relieve constipation and lower cholesterol. Fennel also helps relieve nasal congestion. Chewing these seeds relieves cough and sore throat. It contains Phytoestrogens and being an anti spasmodic it helps relieve pre menstrual syndrome. Fennel seed tea is beneficial to those with poor eyesight.
