Nutmeg and Mace
Locally known as Jaiphal and Javitri, respectively.
Nutmeg and Mace are used as a spice and for flavoring. Nutmeg is the shelled dried seed of the plant and mace is the dried net like covering of the seed shell.
Nutmeg and mace contain chemical compounds that are known to have antioxidant, disease preventing and health promoting properties. They help stimulate appetite and also aid indigestion. These spices are used to treat intestinal infections, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach spasms, pain and flatulence. They are also used for treating cancer, kidney disease and insomnia. Nutmeg and mace may be applied to the skin to treat rheumatism. Nutmeg is effective in killing cavity causing bacteria and controlling bad breath due to its antibacterial properties.Nutmeg contains Myristicin which inhibits an enzyme in the brain that causes Alzheimer’s disease and is used to improve memory. Mace is also known to relieve fatigue. Nutmeg helps asthmatics and is used
to relax muscles. However, Nutmeg should be used in moderation. A pinch or two, and no more at a time is considered safe.
