Black pepper corn is a common spice used in Goa. Black pepper is known for its various health benefits. It is a rich source of antioxidants and thus helps prevent cancers and other diseases.  It is a good source of manganese and iron. The body is able to absorb vitamins and minerals much easily if foods are eaten with black pepper. Pepper stimulates the production of saliva and gastric juices and thus can help breakdown and digest fats and meat proteins much more easily. Pepper stimulates appetite and is thus used for treating people with eating disorders. It also helps prevent gas and flatulence and is also useful to those having poor circulation.

Black pepper can relieve fever symptoms as it induces sweating which helps the body cool down. It is said to promote mental clarity and has been used to treat fatigue.
